MJ Catering

Meet the kitchen

A family kitchen serving pub plates and proper beer

MJ Catering is run by M J & FAMILY HOLDINGS LTD, a family team cooking and pouring in the gastropub style. You come in for a plate of something hot and a pint that has been kept well, and that is exactly what you get. Nothing on the menu is trying to be cleverer than it needs to be.

The kitchen cooks to order through service, so dishes leave the pass when they are ready rather than sitting under a lamp. Sunday roasts run until the meat is gone, and the rest of the week leans on a shorter menu that changes with what the suppliers bring in. You will find pies, burgers, fish, and a few vegetarian plates worth ordering on their own merit.

On the bar side, we keep a rotating craft range alongside familiar cask and keg lines. Lines are cleaned on a fixed rota, glasses are chilled where the beer calls for it, and staff will tell you honestly if a pour is not at its best. If you want a taste before you commit to a full pint, just ask.

Bookings are taken for tables of all sizes, though walk-ins are welcome whenever we have room. Dogs are allowed in the bar area, children are welcome until early evening, and large groups can be arranged with a set menu in advance. Tell us about allergies when you book and the kitchen will work around them.

We are not a restaurant with a pub bolted on, and we are not a wet-led boozer with a microwave in the back. The whole point is that both halves get the same attention. Come for the beer, stay for the food, or do it the other way round.

What we turn down

Work we do not take on at MJ Catering

  1. 01We do not cater weddings or large private functions off site, because our kitchen and bar are built for the room you are standing in.
  2. 02Off-site event catering, marquee bars and mobile bar hires are all work we politely decline.
  3. 03We do not run a takeaway or delivery service, so every plate is eaten here rather than boxed and sent out.
  4. 04Group bookings for more than thirty people are turned down unless a set menu has been agreed at least a week ahead.
